Surprising? Maybe. Important? Not really.
Awful? Certainly not. Some people are gay... that's just how the world is. It's not a bad thing... they're just people like anyone else. -

I'd echo what JTCGH said above. It's great that Rowling filled in that detail but it's not awful.
It may come as a surprise to you but throughout history there have been hundreds and thousands of head teachers who were/are gay. Dumbledore just happens to be a fictional headteacher who's gay.
If you care to look there are huge numbers of gay people who are making a great contribution in all walks of life. Their sexuality is immaterial to the quality of their work. -
